Sydney Blue Gum solid timber flooring: a warm red-brown Australian hardwood in 83 × 14, 130 × 14 and 130 × 19 mm boards, in Select, Standard and Feature grades. seasoned hardness 8.1 kN (WoodSolutions) and a straight, even grain that takes a polish well.

  • Sizes: 83 × 14, 130 × 14 and 130 × 19 mm tongue and groove, priced per m²; 14 mm is an overlay board for gluing over a subfloor or slab, 19 mm goes over joists
  • Grades: Feature (gum veins, knots and the full colour range) is stocked in 130 × 14 mm; Select and Standard are ordered in
  • Timber: Eucalyptus saligna, from coastal forests of NSW and southern Queensland; about 840 kg/m³ seasoned; hardness 8.1 kN seasoned (WoodSolutions)
  • Look: dark pink to reddish-brown heartwood with a fine, straight grain; darker and redder than Blackbutt, lighter than Jarrah
  • Durability: an interior floor, so the timber’s outdoor ratings don’t apply; it is not termite resistant, so keep the subfloor protected
  • Laying and finishing: boards are supplied at 10–12.5% moisture content; if that matches the room, no acclimatisation is needed, otherwise open the packs and re-stack with airflow. Leave the laid floor about two weeks before sanding and coating (WoodSolutions). We stock the adhesives, vapour barrier and skirting

Which thickness: 14 mm overlay or 19 mm structural

The 19 mm board is a structural floor: it spans joists or battens on its own, or goes over a plywood or particleboard subfloor. The 14 mm board is an overlay: it must be glued or nailed to a continuous subfloor, or direct-stuck to a concrete slab over a moisture barrier, and cannot span joists. Both are tongue-and-groove and end-matched, and both are sanded and coated after laying, so the finished floor looks the same; the 14 mm board is cheaper per square metre and sits lower at doorways.

What Sydney Blue Gum flooring is like

Sydney Blue Gum, Eucalyptus saligna, grows in the coastal forests of NSW and southern Queensland and gives the warmest colour of our Australian floors: dark pink to red-brown heartwood with a straight, even grain. WoodSolutions puts its seasoned hardness at 8.1 kN at about 840 kg/m³, a little softer than Blackbutt, and notes that it takes a good polish, which is why it has been used for floors and furniture for a century.

The heartwood is not termite resistant, so keep the subfloor protected; indoors this is a matter for the building, not the board.

Grades for this timber

Feature grade, the one we hold in stock, shows gum veins, knots and the full colour range; Standard is cleaner; Select is cleanest. In Blue Gum the red colour is the draw, and Feature grade gives the most of it for the least money. Grade names vary between suppliers, so ask what each one allows; our timber grades guide explains the system.

Laying and finishing

Boards are supplied kiln-dried at 10–12.5% moisture content. If that matches the house, lay them; if the house is noticeably wetter or drier, open the packs and stack them with airflow for a week first. Leave 10–12 mm expansion gaps at walls and fixed points, more across a wide room. Leave the laid floor about two weeks before sanding and coating so it settles (WoodSolutions). Allow 5–10% extra for cuts and the odd board you set aside. We stock the adhesives, vapour barrier and trims and the skirtings to finish the job.

Questions we get asked

How much does Sydney Blue Gum flooring cost?

On our website on 14 October 2026, the 130 × 14 mm Feature board is $78 per m² and Standard $94 per m²; other sizes and grades are quoted when ordered in.

How red is it?

Dark pink to red-brown, deeper than Blackbutt and lighter than Jarrah. A clear polyurethane deepens it; a water-based coat keeps it closer to the raw colour.

Is it hard enough for a hallway?

At 8.1 kN it is a little under Blackbutt and well above Tasmanian Oak, so yes.

Pickup and delivery

Stocked at our flooring showroom at 170 Settlement Road, Thomastown, Mon–Fri 7 am–4:30 pm and Sat 9 am–1 pm, with delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria quoted with the order. Bring your room sizes in and we will work out the packs, or call (03) 9465 9875.

Janka Rating

Sydney Blue Gum Solid Timber Flooring — Janka hardness: 8.1 kN

What Is the Janka Rating?

The Janka rating is a way to measure how hard a timber is, specifically, how much force it takes to push a small steel ball halfway into the wood. The number you get is shown in kilonewtons (kN). A higher Janka score means a harder, more durable timber. Builders and floor installers use it to work out which timbers hold up better in busy areas.

Here’s a rough guide to how some timbers sit on the scale:

  • Brazilian Walnut – around 16.0 kN
  • Spotted Gum – roughly 11.0 kN
  • Tasmanian Oak – about 5.5 kN
  • Radiata Pine – close to 3.0 kN

Keep in mind: these values can vary depending on moisture content and grain direction.

It's One Part of the Decision

Hardness is useful to know, but it’s just one factor. Janka doesn’t tell you how a timber reacts to heat or humidity, how stable it is, or how easy it is to cut and install.

Some of the hardest woods can be difficult to work with. Others, even if softer, might be more stable or forgiving on-site.

At Greenhill Timbers, we look at the whole picture, not just the numbers. All our timbers are structurally graded and covered by a 25-year guarantee. We'll help you pick something that works for your project, not just on paper.
