MeySPAN LVL 14 in a 200 x 45mm section — engineered structural timber for joists, rafters and lintels where a little extra depth is needed. Laminated veneer lumber is built up from thin timber veneers bonded under heat and pressure, so it behaves far more predictably than sawn hardwood of the same size: it comes straight, stays straight, and carries the load the span table says it will.
Why LVL over sawn timber
Because the veneers are graded and the natural defects are dispersed through the lamination rather than concentrated in one knot, every length performs to the same published values. There is no picking through the pack looking for a straight one. It also resists the shrinking, cupping and twisting that sawn timber goes through as it dries out — which matters in Melbourne, where framing can sit exposed through a wet winter before it is lined.
