  • Sizes: 83 × 14, 130 × 14 and 130 × 19 mm tongue and groove, end-matched, priced per m²; 14 mm is an overlay board for a continuous subfloor or slab, 19 mm goes over joists

Which thickness: 14 mm overlay or 19 mm structural

The 19 mm board is a structural floor: it spans joists or battens on its own, or goes over a plywood or particleboard subfloor. The 14 mm board is an overlay: it must be glued or nailed to a continuous subfloor, or direct-stuck to a concrete slab over a moisture barrier, and cannot span joists. Both are tongue-and-groove and end-matched, and both are sanded and coated after laying, so the finished floor looks the same; the 14 mm board is cheaper per square metre and sits lower at doorways.

What Brushbox flooring is like

Brush Box, Lophostemon confertus, is a coastal tree from northern NSW and Queensland and the quietest-looking floor on this list: greyish pink through to a soft red-brown with a fine, tight, slightly interlocked grain and almost no gum vein, so the finished floor is smooth and even. WoodSolutions puts its seasoned hardness at 9.1 kN at about 890 kg/m³, between Blackbutt and Spotted Gum, and the heartwood is termite resistant.

It is the floor for people who want timber without feature marks. It sands to a very smooth surface and takes clear coats well; stains take less evenly because the grain is so tight.

Grades for this timber

Even Feature grade Brush Box is a clean-looking board, because the timber has little gum vein to begin with; Standard and Select are cleaner again and are ordered in. Grade names vary between suppliers, so ask what each one allows; our timber grades guide explains the system.

Laying and finishing

Boards are supplied kiln-dried at 10–12.5% moisture content. If that matches the house, lay them; if the house is noticeably wetter or drier, open the packs and stack them with airflow for a week first. Leave 10–12 mm expansion gaps at walls and fixed points, more across a wide room. Leave the laid floor about two weeks before sanding and coating so it settles (WoodSolutions). Allow 5–10% extra for cuts and the odd board you set aside. We stock the adhesives, vapour barrier and trims and the skirtings to finish the job.

Janka Rating

Brushbox Timber Flooring — Janka hardness: 9.1 kN

What Is the Janka Rating?

The Janka rating is a way to measure how hard a timber is, specifically, how much force it takes to push a small steel ball halfway into the wood. The number you get is shown in kilonewtons (kN). A higher Janka score means a harder, more durable timber. Builders and floor installers use it to work out which timbers hold up better in busy areas.

Here’s a rough guide to how some timbers sit on the scale:

  • Brazilian Walnut – around 16.0 kN
  • Spotted Gum – roughly 11.0 kN
  • Tasmanian Oak – about 5.5 kN
  • Radiata Pine – close to 3.0 kN

Keep in mind: these values can vary depending on moisture content and grain direction.

It's One Part of the Decision

Hardness is useful to know, but it’s just one factor. Janka doesn’t tell you how a timber reacts to heat or humidity, how stable it is, or how easy it is to cut and install.

Some of the hardest woods can be difficult to work with. Others, even if softer, might be more stable or forgiving on-site.

At Greenhill Timbers, we look at the whole picture, not just the numbers. All our timbers are structurally graded and covered by a 25-year guarantee. We'll help you pick something that works for your project, not just on paper.
