American Oak solid timber flooring: white oak boards in 85 to 180 mm widths, 14 and 19 mm thick, Premium grade, priced per m². Pale yellow-brown with a straight grain and a Janka hardness of 6 kN, it is the classic light oak floor and takes stains and whitewashes well.

  • Sizes in stock: 85 × 14, 110 × 14, 130 × 14, 155 × 14, 155 × 19, 180 × 14 and 180 × 19 mm, tongue and groove; 14 mm overlays a subfloor or slab, 19 mm goes over joists
  • Grade: Premium — the cleanest grade, minimal knots and colour variation
  • Timber: American white oak (Quercus alba and related species), imported from the USA, where growth exceeds harvest in every major supplying state (American Hardwood Export Council); about 750 kg/m³; Janka 6 kN (WoodSolutions)
  • Look: pale yellow-brown to mid-brown, sometimes with a pink tinge, and a straight grain with the flecked figure oak is known for; it stains, limes and whitewashes well
  • Stability: hard and stable once dry, but oak moves more than Tasmanian Oak with humidity, so acclimatise it and keep the recommended expansion gaps, especially on 180 mm boards
  • Compare: want a pale floor with less movement? See Tasmanian Oak; want engineered oak for a slab, see European oak engineered flooring
  • Laying and finishing: boards are supplied at 10–12.5% moisture content; if that matches the room, no acclimatisation is needed, otherwise open the packs and re-stack with airflow. Leave the laid floor about two weeks before sanding and coating (WoodSolutions). We stock the adhesives, vapour barrier and skirting
  • At Greenhill: stocked at 170 Settlement Road, Thomastown, with pickup or delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria. See all our solid timber flooring.

Product Description

What to Expect from American Oak?

American Oak has a calm, open grain that works well in both traditional and modern builds. You won’t see dramatic colour shifts from board to board; the tones tend to hover around light blondes, sometimes with soft golden hues. That uniformity is why it’s a go-to for flooring in homes in homes and commercial spaces alike.

You can leave it natural, stain it dark, or apply a clear finish. It takes all of them evenly, which gives you flexibility during fit-out or refinishing down the track.

How It Performs?

In terms of hardness, American Oak rates 6.0 on the Janka scale. That makes it durable enough for regular use. Think living areas, hallways, even office floors, but still easy to work with. Installers tend to like it for that reason. It machines cleanly, holds fasteners well, and doesn’t surprise you on-site.

Like most solid timbers, it will expand and contract a little with the seasons, but it settles down once acclimatised and sealed.

Sizes Available

You’ve got some flexibility when it comes to dimensions:

Wider boards often get used in open-plan areas, while narrower sizes can work better in smaller rooms or older properties.

Grade Options

We offer American Oak in two grades:

  • Premium Grade – Generally smoother, with very few knots and a consistent tone.
  • Standard Grade – Shows more of the timber’s natural features like pinholes, knots, or grain variation.

The boards come tongue-and-groove, end-matched, and work with direct stick, ply-over-concrete, or batten systems.

Day-to-Day Upkeep

Once it’s in, there’s not much to worry about. Sweep or vacuum when needed. A lightly damp mop does the trick for most cleaning. The surface holds up well, and if it gets scuffed or worn years down the line, it can be sanded and refinished.

Janka Rating

American Oak Solid Timber Flooring — Janka hardness: 6.0 kN

What Is the Janka Rating?

The Janka rating is a way to measure how hard a timber is, specifically, how much force it takes to push a small steel ball halfway into the wood. The number you get is shown in kilonewtons (kN). A higher Janka score means a harder, more durable timber. Builders and floor installers use it to work out which timbers hold up better in busy areas.

Here’s a rough guide to how some timbers sit on the scale:

  • Brazilian Walnut – around 16.0 kN
  • Spotted Gum – roughly 11.0 kN
  • Tasmanian Oak – about 5.5 kN
  • Radiata Pine – close to 3.0 kN

Keep in mind: these values can vary depending on moisture content and grain direction.

It's One Part of the Decision

Hardness is useful to know, but it’s just one factor. Janka doesn’t tell you how a timber reacts to heat or humidity, how stable it is, or how easy it is to cut and install.

Some of the hardest woods can be difficult to work with. Others, even if softer, might be more stable or forgiving on-site.

At Greenhill Timbers, we look at the whole picture, not just the numbers. All our timbers are structurally graded and covered by a 25-year guarantee. We'll help you pick something that works for your project, not just on paper.
