Why composite over timber
Timber decks move, split and grey off, and they need recoating every year or two to stay looking new. Composite does not rot, does not feed termites, and the colour is engineered through the board rather than sitting on top as a coating that peels. On a deck that gets full Melbourne sun and a wet winter, that is the difference between a weekend job every spring and no job at all.
Fascia board
Fascia covers the exposed frame around the deck perimeter, hiding joists and bearers. At 180mm wide and 15mm thick it is made to face rather than carry load, so it is not a substitute for a deck board.
