STRUCTAflor Yellow Tongue is 19 mm structural particleboard flooring for joists at up to 450 mm centres, in 3600 × 800 mm tongue-and-groove sheets, sold per sheet. It is the standard subfloor for a timber-framed house; the thicker Red Tongue (22 mm) and Blue Tongue (25 mm) are for 600 mm joist centres.

  • Thickness: 19 mm — yellow tongue means 19 mm, red tongue 22 mm, blue tongue 25 mm (Borg / Australian Panels)
  • Sheet size: 3600 × 800 mm, tongue and groove on the long edges, square-cut ends; about 38 kg per sheet
  • Joist spacing: up to 450 mm centres for residential floors; for 600 mm centres use 22 or 25 mm
  • How many sheets: each sheet covers 2.88 m², so a 60 m² floor takes 21 sheets plus cuts
  • Fixing: glue and screw — STRUCTAflor requires a 5 mm bead of construction adhesive on every joist, with screws preferred over nails
  • Weather: can be exposed for up to five months during construction, then must be covered; not for permanently exposed floors
  • Standard: Class 1 particleboard flooring to AS/NZS 1860.1, made in Australia from plantation pine; ask us for the H2 termite-treated version if your site needs it
  • Goes with: framing pine and joist hangers
  • At Greenhill: stocked at 170 Settlement Road, Thomastown, with pickup or delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria. See all our framing timber.

Product Description

What is Yellow Tongue Flooring?

Yellow tougue flooring refers to a 19 mm-thick structural particleboard sheet, used as a subfloor over joists or bearers. It gets its name from the coloured strip along the edge, which helps builders identify sheet thickness easily during installation. These boards are designed to support general domestic and light commercial builds.

Where It’s Used

This product suits both platform flooring (where sheets are laid before walls go up) and traditional fitted flooring. Sheets have a tongue-and-groove profile, which allows them to interlock neatly and reduces movement between boards.

Typical specs include:

  • 3600 x 800 mm sheet size
  • 19 mm thickness
  • Designed for 450 mm joist centres
  • Can be nailed or screwed directly to framing

Moisture and On-Site Durability

Each board has a resin-coated surface and wax added throughout to help resist moisture. The edges are also wax sealed to help reduce moisture uptake at joins. While not waterproof, they hold up well under typical site exposure, especially when stored flat and covered.

Options for Different Conditions

In areas prone to termites, H2-treated variants are available (STRUCTAflor Terminator). These include a safe termite treatment that’s built into the board.

If thermal performance is a priority, R-flor® boards come with a reflective backing to improve insulation under suspended floors, particularly useful in cooler regions.
