Hybrid Flooring
Hybrid flooring in Melbourne
Greenhill Timbers stocks hybrid flooring at our showroom at 170 Settlement Road, Thomastown, with pickup or delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Hybrid boards have a rigid stone-plastic (SPC) core under a printed timber-look layer and a hard wear layer, so they are water resistant, stable and can be laid over most existing floors as a floating floor with a click-lock joint.
What we stock
Our 6.5 mm and 7 mm hybrid ranges in straight planks (1524 × 180 mm) and herringbone (635 × 127 mm), in oak and Australian species colours: Hojicha, Lilac Grey, Filbert and White Haze, plus Blackbutt, Grey Oak, Maple, Natural Oak and Sunshine Blackbutt in the 6.5 mm range, and Australian Select Timbers’ Kodiak hybrid in Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and other Australian species. Colours vary between screens, so see the boards in the showroom or take a sample home before you decide.
Hybrid, laminate or engineered?
Hybrid is water resistant, so it suits kitchens, laundries and homes with pets. Laminate is cheaper but handles water poorly. Engineered oak has a real timber top layer and can be sanded once or twice. If the room floods regularly or you want the easiest install, hybrid wins; if you want real timber underfoot, look at engineered flooring.
Laying it
Hybrid floats over a flat, dry subfloor with an underlay; leave the expansion gap the maker specifies at walls and cover it with skirting. We stock the underlay, skirting and floor protection. Tell us the room size and we will work out packs, with about 10% for cuts. Call 03 9465 9875, Mon–Fri 7am–4:30pm, Sat 9am–1pm.
Questions we get asked about hybrid flooring
Is hybrid flooring waterproof?
The boards are, thanks to a rigid stone-polymer core, which is why hybrid suits kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. Joints resist water but standing water should still be wiped up.
Hybrid or laminate flooring?
Hybrid has a waterproof core and a quieter feel underfoot. Laminate has an HDF core, costs less and is not waterproof, so it suits bedrooms and living areas rather than wet rooms.
Does hybrid flooring need underlay?
Most ranges come with an acoustic backing already attached. Check the board you choose; if it has no backing, lay a thin underlay first.
Can hybrid flooring go over existing tiles?
Yes, as long as the tiles are flat, sound and clean. Fill any deep grout lines first so they do not telegraph through the board.
