European Oak
European Oak Flooring in Melbourne
European Oak is the timber most new Melbourne interiors are built around, and the reason is in the grain: fine, even, and open enough to take stain and reactive finishes without blotching. The same board can be finished as a limed white or a smoked near-black and still read as oak. Greenhill Timbers holds over 30 European Oak colours at our Thomastown yard, in plank, herringbone and chevron.
Board sizes and wear layers
Every European Oak floor we stock is engineered — a genuine oak wear layer bonded to a multi-ply core — which is what makes the wide, long boards below possible, and why they are the usual choice over a concrete slab.
Wide plank, 2200 × 240 × 15mm, 4mm wear layer. The Grand Oak Everest collection: Augusta, Hampton, Mont Blanc, Oakmont, Pinehurst and Sand Hills. 2.112m² per pack.
Standard plank, 1900 × 190 × 15mm, 4mm wear layer. Ten colours from $80/m², including Bower Oak, White Sands, Caramel Smoke, Sail Grey, French Grey and Earl Grey. Espresso also runs in a 21mm board.
Chevron blocks, 900 × 150 × 14.5mm, 3mm wear layer. The Grand Oak Chevron collection: Natural Oak, Balinese Oak, Gunsynd Oak, Mink Grey, Parisien Grey, Black Opal and Raw. 1.35m² per pack.
All boards are tongue and groove with bevelled or micro-bevelled edges, finished matte over a brushed surface, and the Grand Oak collections carry 8–10 coats of UV lacquer. Wear layer is the number worth paying attention to: 4mm leaves room to sand and refinish the floor more than once, while 3mm is generally good for a single full sand.
Plank, herringbone or chevron
Most colours are available as straight planks and as herringbone or chevron blocks, so one tone can run through the whole house with the pattern changing room to room. Pattern floors need more setting out and take longer to lay, so allow for that in the installation quote. The blocks we hold are listed under Parquetry, and the wider range sits under Engineered Timber Flooring.
