Galvanised post stirrups (decking stirrups) by McIntyre: the standard way to hold a timber post off the ground on a deck, pergola or fence, in 90 mm and 115 mm widths with 200, 300, 450 or 600 mm legs for setting in concrete.

• Which width: 90 mm suits 90 × 90 and 88 × 88 posts; 115 mm suits 115 × 115, 112 × 112 and 100 × 100 posts with packers
• Which leg: 200 or 300 mm for a post hole in firm ground; 450 and 600 mm for deeper footings and softer soil
• Why a stirrup: H3 treated pine and Merbau are not rated for ground contact, so the stirrup keeps the post end out of the soil and the wet
• Finish: hot-dip galvanised steel; use galvanised or stainless bolts
