Key Features of QLD Spotted Gum Flooring
A Durable Timber with Real Character
The heartwood color range of QLD Spotted Gum is quite extensive, spanning from a light tannish brown to dark browns, and sometimes displaying a deep reddish tinge. It is considered one of the darkest brown species found in Australia. Additionally, QLD Spotted Gum is truly hard-wearing and its strong nature makes it highly resistant to scratches and dints. It has a Janka hardness rating of 11.0, which places it among the tougher hardwoods commonly used in residential and commercial spaces. That level of hardness means it resists dents and wears well, even in high-traffic areas.
It’s also rated BAL 29, making it suitable for use in areas exposed to moderate bushfire risk. That added compliance gives peace of mind when selecting materials for rural or regional builds.
Movement in Colour and Grain
What sets QLD Spotted Gum apart is its variation. It’s not a flat-toned timber. Colours can shift from pale browns to deeper chocolate streaks, even within the same board. The grain is typically interlocked or wavy, with a natural ripple effect and the occasional gum vein or feature mark. For those who prefer a floor with texture and movement, it offers plenty without overwhelming the space.
Sizes and Installation Compatibility
We offer QLD Spotted Gum in a versatile 130 x 14 mm profile, tongue-and-groove and end-matched to assist with clean board alignment and quicker installation. It can be installed over battens, plywood, or directly onto a concrete slab, depending on your subfloor and build.
Grading options include:
- Select Grade – consistent tone and grain, fewer visible marks
- Standard Grade – a natural mix of grain pattern and features
- Feature Grade – knots, gum veins, and more colour variation for a bold look
Everyday Use and Maintenance
Once laid and sealed, this floor is straightforward to maintain. It does not require regular oiling or special care, just sweeping, vacuuming, and the occasional mop with a damp cloth. It’s designed to handle changing conditions without much movement, assuming proper acclimatisation and installation.
If you’re planning a high-use space that still needs visual warmth, QLD Spotted Gum is a solid, reliable option. Let us know if you’d like samples, grade comparisons, or help deciding what finish will work best with your design.
