Key Features of Blackbutt Timber Flooring
Blackbutt is one of those timbers thatโs hard to fault. Grown in Australia and widely used in both homes and commercial spaces, it brings together durability and a clean, understated look. The colour ranges from pale cream to light honey brown, with a fine, straight grain that doesnโt draw too much attention but still adds warmth to the space.
Unlike some species that vary a lot from board to board, Blackbutt tends to be more uniform, which makes it easier to plan around, especially if youโre trying to keep a consistent tone throughout your floors.
Suitable for Bushfire Zones
One of the reasons Blackbutt is often chosen for Australian homes is its natural bushfire resistance. It meets BAL 29 requirements, which means it can be used in areas where building codes demand higher fire performance. That peace of mind, along with the timberโs natural density, makes it a practical choice for rural or semi-rural builds.
Everyday Practicality
With a Janka rating of 9.1, Blackbutt is tough enough to cope with daily wear without being too difficult to cut, install or finish. It works well in living rooms, hallways and spaces that see regular foot traffic. Like most hardwoods, it can expand or contract slightly with the seasons, but it holds its shape well once itโs been acclimatised and sealed.
Boards are milled with a tongue-and-groove profile and are end-matched for easier installation. You can use them over battens, glued to concrete, or laid over plywood, depending on your subfloor and method.
Choice of Appearance
You can choose from Select Grade for a more uniform look with minimal knots, or Standard Grade, which brings more natural character like gum veins and subtle colour variation. We supply Blackbutt Timber flooring in two common sizes:
- 130 x 14 mm
- 130 x 19 mm
Both sizes are tongue-and-groove with end matching, allowing for clean installation whether youโre using battens, direct stick, or floating methods over ply.
Care and Refinishing
Looking after Blackbutt is straightforward. Sweep or vacuum regularly and use a lightly damp mop when needed. It doesnโt call for special treatments, though you can always sand it back and recoat it later down the track if you want to change the finish or freshen up the surface.
There are many matching blackbutt products at Greenhill Timbers to complete your project, such as Matching Blackbutt Decking for a smooth indoorโoutdoor transition and All Blackbutts Flooring varieties for a wide range of styles & budgets.
