Timber Decking for Practical Outdoor Projects

Why Timber?

There’s no shortage of materials out there now, composites, plastic boards, aluminium kits. But timber still holds its own. It’s tough, workable, and feels solid underfoot. There’s a reason it’s still used on so many job sites across Australia.

We mostly recommend hardwoods for decking. Not because they’re fancy, but because they last. Many of them have natural resistance to decay and insect damage, and they take oil well when it’s time to maintain. It’s the kind of material that settles in, ages a bit, and still looks decent.

Some of the more common uses we see include:

• Backyards and alfresco areas
• Pool surrounds (with the right sealant)
• Raised decks on steel or timber frames
• Small front porches or step platforms

If you’re doing the job yourself, we can run you through what to expect. You’ll need to pre-drill most hardwoods, and it’s worth picking up quality fixings — cheap screws will snap halfway in.

What We Keep in Stock

We carry a wide range of timber decking boards in sizes ranging from 86×19 to 140x19mm. Lengths vary depending on what’s in the yard, but you’ll usually find something between 1.8 to 5.7 metres. We try to stock longer lengths for neater runs, but it’s always good to call ahead if you need specific cuts.

Popular species include:

• Merbau – dense, rich in colour, fairly easy to work with
• Spotted Gum – lighter tone, good movement stability, BAL rated
• Blackbutt – clean grain, popular for bushfire-prone zones
• Ironbark – very dense, heavy, lasts forever but harder on tools
• Tallowwood – pale tone, low tannin bleed, handles moisture well

Some of these timbers bleed more than others. If you're installing near paving or light-coloured walls, we’ll usually point that out before you load up.

Built for Australian Conditions

Australia’s climate is a bit of a mixed bag with a range of weather conditions. Not all timbers handle that well. We’ve picked decking products that cope with expansion and contraction, especially where airflow under the deck is limited. Kiln-dried boards are standard across the range to reduce warping and shrinkage once installed.

You might still notice some movement, especially in the first few months. That’s normal. Let the timber settle, oil it regularly, and it should hold its shape for years.
