Description

Tasmanian Oak solid timber flooring: a pale, straight-grained Australian hardwood in 85, 108, 112 and 133 mm widths, 12, 13 and 19 mm thick, Prime grade, in stock at Thomastown. Straw to soft pink-brown, it takes stains and clear finishes well and is prized for its stability.

  • Sizes in stock: 85 × 12, 85 × 19, 108 × 19, 112 × 13, 133 × 12 and 133 × 19 mm, tongue and groove, priced per m²
  • Which thickness: 19 mm is the structural board that goes over joists or a plywood subfloor; 12 and 13 mm overlay boards are glued down over an existing floor or slab
  • Grade: Prime, the cleanest grade with few gum veins or knots (Tasmanian Timber grades under AS 2796)
  • Timber: Tasmanian Oak is three eucalypts sold together — alpine ash (E. delegatensis), mountain ash (E. regnans) and messmate (E. obliqua); about 650 kg/m³ seasoned; seasoned hardness 4.9 kN (WoodSolutions; Tasmanian Timber quotes 5.5)
  • Look: straw to reddish-brown with cream and pink tones, an even straight grain, and the colour holds under a clear finish, so it suits pale, Scandinavian and coastal interiors
  • Stability: low movement for a hardwood — about 0.23% radial and 0.36% tangential per 1% change in moisture (Tasmanian Timber), which is why it is the preferred floor for wide boards and underfloor heating
  • Hardness in use: softer than Spotted Gum (10.1 kN) or Blackbutt (8.9 kN); fine for family homes, but for heavy commercial traffic look at Spotted Gum
  • Laying and finishing: boards are supplied at 10–12.5% moisture content; if that matches the room, no acclimatisation is needed, otherwise open the packs and re-stack with airflow. Leave the laid floor about two weeks before sanding and coating (WoodSolutions). We stock the adhesives, vapour barrier and skirting
  • At Greenhill: stocked at 170 Settlement Road, Thomastown, with pickup or delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria. See all our solid timber flooring.

Which thickness: 12 and 13 mm overlay or 19 mm structural

The 19 mm boards (85, 108 and 133 mm wide) are structural: they span joists or battens on their own, or go over a plywood or particleboard subfloor. The 12 and 13 mm boards (85 × 12, 112 × 13 and 133 × 12) are overlay floors that must be glued or nailed to a continuous subfloor or direct-stuck to a slab over a moisture barrier. All are tongue-and-groove and end-matched, and all are sanded and coated after laying.

What Tasmanian Oak flooring is like

Tasmanian Oak is not one tree but three sold together: alpine ash (Eucalyptus delegatensis), mountain ash (E. regnans) and messmate (E. obliqua), cut in Tasmania and Victoria. The boards are pale, from straw through cream and pink to a light reddish brown, with a straight, even grain and almost no gum vein in Prime grade, which is why it is the floor people choose when they want the room to feel light.

It is the softest floor on this list, with a seasoned hardness of 4.9 kN in the WoodSolutions table (Tasmanian Timber quotes 5.5), at about 650 kg/m³, so it marks more easily than Blackbutt or Spotted Gum under stiletto heels and dragged chairs. In exchange it is the most stable: unit movement of 0.23% radial and 0.36% tangential per 1% change in moisture, which is why wide boards and underfloor heating are usually done in Tasmanian Oak. It takes stains and clear coats evenly and sands cleanly.

Grades for this timber

Our Tasmanian Oak is Prime grade, the cleanest grade: few gum veins, knots or marks, and an even colour across the pack. It is the grade to use when the floor is meant to read as one pale surface. Grade names vary between suppliers, so ask what each one allows; our timber grades guide explains the system.

Laying and finishing

Boards are supplied kiln-dried at 10–12.5% moisture content. If that matches the house, lay them; if the house is noticeably wetter or drier, open the packs and stack them with airflow for a week first. Leave 10–12 mm expansion gaps at walls and fixed points, more across a wide room. Leave the laid floor about two weeks before sanding and coating so it settles (WoodSolutions). Allow 5–10% extra for cuts and the odd board you set aside. We stock the adhesives, vapour barrier and trims and the skirtings to finish the job.

Questions we get asked

How much does Tasmanian Oak flooring cost?

On our website on 14 October 2026, from $84.99 per m² for 85 × 12 mm overlay to $117 per m² for the 133 × 19 mm structural board (on sale from $132.99).

Is Tasmanian Oak a hardwood?

Yes, botanically, but a soft one: 4.9 kN seasoned hardness against 8.9 for Blackbutt and 10.1 for Spotted Gum. For a family home it is fine; for a shop floor choose Spotted Gum.

Which width should I choose?

85 mm is the traditional look and the cheapest; 133 mm shows fewer joins and suits big rooms. Because Tasmanian Oak is so stable, the wide board is a safe choice.

Can I lay it over underfloor heating?

Solid boards can be, with care and a slow start-up, but the engineered Tasmanian Oak is the safer product for heated slabs.

Does it yellow?

Clear polyurethane warms it slightly over time; a water-based coat keeps it closest to the raw colour.
