Description
Messmate solid timber flooring brings warmth, grain variation, and long-term durability to homes and light commercial spaces. With a Janka rating of 7.1 and compliance with BAL 12.5 bushfire zoning, it’s well-suited for high-traffic areas across a range of builds. The boards can be sanded and refinished over time, making them a smart investment for long-term use. Visually rich, easy to maintain, and structurally reliable, it’s a floor that works as hard as it looks.
Why is Messmate Solid Flooring a Popular Choice?
Messmate has a lived-in look that feels familiar — pale straw through to soft browns, with gum veins, ripple marks, and the occasional knot. Each board is different, which gives the floor movement and variation without looking too busy. It fits in well across a wide range of interiors, especially where natural materials are part of the palette.
Boards are graded to help guide the finish. We supply feature grade, which is character-rich, with clear visual detail. Whether you go for a matte clear coat or a toned finish, you’ll still see the timber come through.
Practical Strength
Messmate sits at 7.1 on the Janka scale — enough to handle regular wear, but not so hard that installation becomes difficult. Most builders and flooring contractors find it easy to cut, shape, and sand. It’s also relatively stable once laid, with minimal seasonal expansion when the boards have been properly acclimatised and installed.
Thermal insulation is moderate (R-value approx. 0.066 m²·K/W at 19 mm), and the timber meets BAL 12.5 requirements for use in low bushfire risk areas.
Sizes and Installation
We stock the following profiles:
- 85 x 14 mm
- 110 x 14 mm
- 130 x 14 mm
- 180 x 14 mm
- Select sizes also in 19 mm
Boards are tongue-and-groove and end-matched for faster installation. Installation options include direct stick to concrete, plank-on-ply, or batten systems, depending on the subfloor and layout.
Day-to-Day Use
Ongoing maintenance is minimal. A soft broom, vacuum, and a lightly damp mop will handle most cleaning needs. No specialist products required unless you’re working with a particular finish.
The surface can be resanded and resealed several times during its lifespan, which makes it a long-term option in homes that expect high use.
Built to Last
Messmate is supplied with a 25-year structural warranty. If you need help working out the best size, grade, or installation approach, we’re here to talk through the details. Bring your plans or just a rough idea, we’ll help match you to the right product.
