What H3 and MGP10 mean

H3 is the hazard level for timber used outside, above ground and exposed to the weather: decks, pergolas, fences and external framing. It is not for timber in the ground; for posts in soil, use H4 or set them in stirrups. MGP10 is the machine-graded stress grade used for house framing, so spans can be read straight from the AS 1684 span tables. LOSP is a solvent-based treatment that leaves the pine dry, light and paintable, and cut ends should be resealed.

Going with it

Concrete stumps, Rapid Set and PRO50 concrete, galvanised joist hangers in every size above, strapnails, bugle screws and VapourSeal joist tape are all under decking accessories; posts and stirrups are under structural posts. For pre-primed pine for pergolas, fascias and verandahs, see LOSP primed pine. Call 03 9465 9875, Mon–Fri 7am–4:30pm, Sat 9am–1pm.

Questions we get asked about treated pine

What does H3 treated pine mean?

H3 is the hazard class for timber used outside, above the ground, exposed to the weather. It covers deck frames, pergolas, fence rails and cladding battens. Timber in the ground needs H4.

How long does H3 treated pine last?

Decades above ground as long as it can dry out and is not sitting in soil or standing water. In the ground it fails early, which is what H4 posts are for. Our H3 treated pine guide covers the details.

Can I paint or stain LOSP treated pine?

Yes. LOSP treatment is paint-friendly once the timber is dry, which is why the primed LOSP range exists. Oil or paint every face and cut end.

Is treated pine safe for vegetable garden beds?

Avoid CCA-treated timber for vegetable beds. Ask us for an LOSP or non-CCA H4 option if the timber will touch soil the food grows in.

What MGP10, F7 and H3 mean is explained in our timber grades guide.

New in the yard: LifeCore H3V, an H3-treated LVL sold as a direct substitute for H3 MGP10 treated pine, with the treatment through every veneer so cut ends need sealing, not re-treating.
