Description
Merbau FJL GL17 140 × 42 mm: finger-jointed laminated Merbau graded GL17, so it carries a structural rating that solid dressed Merbau doesn’t, while keeping the same colour and durability.
- Lengths: 4.2 m and 5.4 m
- What it’s for: pergola and verandah beams, posts and exposed framing where the timber is both the structure and the finish
- Why finger-jointed: laminating short lengths gives a straighter, more stable beam than a single solid section of the same size
- Timber: Merbau (Intsia bijuga and I. palembanica) from Southeast Asia and the Pacific; orange-brown, darkening with age; about 830–860 kg/m³, Janka hardness 8.5 kN
- Durability: Class 1 above ground, which the Queensland Government rates at more than 40 years’ expected life; the heartwood is termite resistant
- Bushfire: Merbau is on the AS 3959 list of bushfire-resisting timbers, accepted up to BAL-29
- Not for in-ground use: Merbau is only Class 3 in-ground, so keep posts off the soil with galvanised stirrups rather than setting them in concrete
- Tannin: new Merbau bleeds tannin that stains concrete, paving and render. Seal every face and cut end, and to finish it straight away, draw the tannin out first with Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover
- Finishing: coat every face and cut end before fixing, then recoat at least once a year, or leave it bare to weather silver-grey. Oils we stock: CUTEK CD50, Intergrain Universal Timber Oil or Sceney’s Timber Decking Oil
- Solid Merbau instead: 140 × 42 mm dressed Merbau in the same size, appearance grade rather than structural
- At Greenhill: stocked at 170 Settlement Road, Thomastown, with pickup or delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria. See all our dressed Merbau.
